On the evening of Tuesday October 27, 2009, a group of Muslims attacked St. George Coptic Church as well as some houses, shops and cars in the village "Albderman" in Elmenia province in Upper Egypt. The attacks by the Muslim mob occurred in an attempt to stop the restoration work to a beacon of the church, for which the official permit of restoration was already procured by the Church. The attackers smashed the glass windows of the church, the doors of Copts houses and destroyed three cars belonging to the Christian Copts of the village and injured a Christian woman named "Iman Yonan Nada".
Following the attacks, the security forces were deployed to secure the village and to prevent further deterioration of the situation, meanwhile the village Christians remained in the Church building until late at night for fear of Muslim attacks.
A source form the church stated that the Church of St. George serves 5000 inhabitants, and that the renovations of the church, with the exception lighthouse, were carried out some eight years ago. After four years of negotiations and arguments with the authorities, and because of concerns about the structural integrity and for the safety of the parishioners, the Church obtained a license for restoration and renovation of lighthouse, just two days ago. As soon as the demolition and digging the foundations of the lighthouse commenced, a local Muslim named Ahmed Saleh Sabra" came and stood in front of the church shouting accusations at the priests, saying "You have to stop, This is Fitna" (religious discourse) . The church security guard failed to get him off the property and the attacks process began prompting the priest to direct the building workers to take shelter in the church building as the Muslim villagers started chants and rocks throwing at the church glass windows and doors and the hostile crowd moved onto the Copts houses, throwing bricks at them, and smashed three cars owned by Christians. They injured a Coptic woman, resulting in bruises and wounds that have not been determined yet. The church is presently without front doors or a beacon because of the incomplete building and renovation work and the police have placed a security force post at the church’s entrance. __________________
